What causes anemia in children?
Disease description:
My son has been feeling unwell lately. I took him to see a doctor, and the doctor said he has anemia. May I ask, what causes anemia in children?
Possible causes of anemia in children may include the following:
1. **Nutritional Iron Deficiency Anemia**: This can result from insufficient iron stores in the body, inadequate dietary iron intake, rapid growth and development, or excessive iron loss or consumption. Children may develop anemia due to picky eating habits that lead to insufficient iron intake.
2. **Hemorrhagic Anemia**: Commonly caused by acute or chronic blood loss due to trauma, bleeding disorders, intestinal malformations, peptic ulcer disease, and similar conditions.
3. **Hemolytic Anemia**: May be caused by hereditary spherocytosis, parasites, bacterial toxins, hemolytic infections, and other factors that lead to the destruction of red blood cells.
4. **Congenital Factors**: Some children, such as premature infants or those from multiple births (twins or triplets), may have reduced iron stores in the fetal stage, increasing the risk of anemia.
5. **Aplastic Anemia**: May result from reduced or failed hematopoietic function of the child's bone marrow.
