My friend has developed many white patches in his mouth, and he is very worried that it might be caused by AIDS. Is there a connection between oral white patches and HIV/AIDS?

There is a certain association between oral leukoplakia and HIV/AIDS, primarily reflected in the following two aspects: 1. **Oral manifestations in HIV/AIDS patients**: Some individuals with HIV/AIDS, particularly males, may develop hairy leukoplakia within the oral cavity. This type of leukoplakia typically appears as white or gray-white patches; those with more pronounced hyperplasia may have a fuzzy, hairy appearance and are not easily wiped away. These lesions commonly occur on the lateral borders of the tongue, and in some cases may even spread across the entire dorsal surface of the tongue. 2. **Causes of oral leukoplakia**: Apart from its association with HIV/AIDS, oral leukoplakia can also be caused by various other factors, including smoking, alcohol consumption, food irritation, poor oral hygiene, nutritional deficiencies, and genetic factors. While there is indeed a link between oral leukoplakia and HIV/AIDS, not all cases of oral leukoplakia are caused by HIV infection. If white patches appear in the oral cavity, it is recommended to seek timely medical evaluation to determine the underlying cause and receive appropriate treatment.
