Dr. Yang Ziqi
As a traditional Chinese medicinal herb, Xanthium seed (Cang E Zi) has functions of dispersing cold pathogens, relieving pain and itching caused by wind conditions. However, improper use may lead to various adverse effects, mainly including: 1. Liver and kidney damage: Long-term administration or overdose of Xanthium seed may cause injury to the liver and kidneys, manifested as elevated transaminase levels, hepatomegaly, jaundice, oliguria, anuria, hematuria, and even renal failure. 2. Gastrointestinal reactions: It may cause nausea, vomiting of coffee-ground material, mild abdominal distension, and other gastrointestinal discomfort symptoms, accompanied by diarrhea or constipation. 3. Cardiovascular injury: It has cardiovascular toxicity. Large doses may cause elevated blood pressure, tachycardia, arrhythmia, and even shock. 4. Skin allergy: Both topical application and oral administration may trigger allergic reactions such as local itching, swelling, papules, and blisters. 5. Central nervous system abnormalities: Overdose may lead to central nervous system damage, manifested as listlessness, headache, dizziness, and in severe cases, somnolence and coma. Therefore, when using Xanthium seed, one should strictly follow medical instructions and avoid self-medicating blindly in order to reduce its toxic and side effects. If the above adverse effects occur, discontinue the medication immediately and seek medical attention.
