Disease description:

My friend has been going through a difficult time lately because her daughter was diagnosed with hemophilia. I visited her at the hospital a couple of days ago and noticed that she looked pale and seemed very weak. May I ask what causes hemophilia?

Dr. Liu Feng
The causes of hemophilia can be summarized as follows: 1. Genetic factors: Hemophilia is closely related to genetic factors, especially congenital deficiency of Factor VIII, which is a typical X-linked recessive inherited disorder. If there is a family history of hemophilia, the incidence rate in offspring will increase accordingly. 2. Gene mutation: During development, patients may experience gene mutations due to external adverse factors, leading to defects in the genes encoding clotting factors VIII and IX, thereby causing hemophilia. 3. Infectious factors: Certain pathogens, such as bacteria and viruses including measles and varicella (chickenpox), as well as RNA tumor viruses of type C, may contribute to the development of hemophilia. 4. Other factors: Additional potential triggers of hemophilia include anemia, chemical factors (e.g., alkylating agents used in the treatment of malignant tumors), and ionizing radiation.
