Disease description:

I experienced pain in the right abdomen today and am wondering if it could be appendicitis. Could you please tell me the exact location of the appendix?

Dr. Shen Yonghua
The appendix is a slender, curved blind-ended tube mainly located in the lower right abdomen, situated between the cecum and the ileum. Its base connects to the posterior medial wall of the cecum, while its distal end is free and closed. The position of the appendix varies greatly and may extend in any direction within the abdominal cavity. Common positions include the preileal, pelvic, and retrocecal positions. Its surface projection is typically at the junction of the outer and middle thirds of the line connecting the umbilicus to the right anterior superior iliac spine, also known as McBurney's point, which is the location of tenderness in appendicitis. The length and diameter of the appendix also vary; the length ranges from 2 to 20 cm, typically averaging 6 to 8 cm, with a diameter of 0.5 to 0.7 cm.
