Can multiple sclerosis be cured?
Disease description:
During a recent physical examination, I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. May I ask, is multiple sclerosis curable?
Multiple sclerosis is an immune-mediated disease of the central nervous system for which there is currently no cure. This disease results from the destruction of nerve myelin sheaths, leading to impaired nerve signal transmission. It involves abnormal immune responses whereby the body mounts an immune reaction against its own myelin antigens, triggering inflammation and damage to nervous tissue. Although multiple sclerosis cannot be cured, early diagnosis and treatment can significantly improve patient outcomes. Treatment methods include pharmacological therapy, immune-modulating therapy, and rehabilitation training, aimed at suppressing inflammatory progression during acute episodes, avoiding recurrence triggers, and reducing neurological dysfunction. Patients should receive appropriate treatment and rehabilitation under the guidance of a specialist, and follow medical advice to adjust lifestyle factors such as quitting smoking and limiting alcohol intake, in order to reduce the frequency of symptom flare-ups and improve quality of life.
