Is fasting required for ABO hemolysis testing?
Disease description:
I want to have an ABO hemolysis test done, as I've never had one before. Is it necessary to fast before an ABO hemolysis test?
The ABO hemolysis test does not require fasting; however, patients should follow the guidance and advice of their doctor to ensure the accuracy and safety of the test.
The ABO hemolysis test is performed to assess the risk of hemolysis that may be caused by blood type incompatibility between mother and child, especially when the mother has blood type O and the fetus has blood type A or B. This test is mainly conducted through methods such as blood typing, collection of blood samples from both mother and child, antiglobulin testing, free antibody screening, and red blood cell enzyme assays.
Fasting is not required before the test, as food does not significantly affect blood components and will not interfere with the hemolysis test results. However, patients should inform their doctor before the test whether they are currently taking any medications, especially those that may affect the results of the hemolysis test, such as iron supplements, liver-protecting tablets, etc.
