Treatment Methods for Renal Hydronephrosis in the Elderly
Disease description:
Recently, I have experienced some swelling in my lower limbs and a decrease in urine output. After visiting the hospital for examination and undergoing an ultrasound scan, the results revealed bilateral hydronephrosis (kidney swelling due to urine buildup). I would like to ask about the treatment options available for hydronephrosis in elderly patients.

The treatment methods for hydronephrosis in the elderly mainly include the following aspects:
1. Etiological treatment: Actively identify and treat the underlying causes of hydronephrosis, such as kidney stones and benign prostatic hyperplasia, by surgical or lithotripsy techniques to relieve obstruction.
2. Pharmacological treatment: For hydronephrosis accompanied by inflammation or infection, antibiotics such as cefixime and amoxicillin may be used to control infection; diuretics such as furosemide and hydrochlorothiazide may be used to promote fluid excretion and reduce the burden on the kidneys.
3. Surgical treatment: For severe hydronephrosis that has caused significant kidney damage or infected hydronephrosis with abscess formation, nephrectomy may be required. Other surgical options include percutaneous nephrostomy drainage and laparoscopic surgery, with the specific approach determined by the patient's condition.
4. Non-surgical treatment: For mild or slowly progressive hydronephrosis, a strategy of observation and follow-up may be adopted, with regular monitoring to assess the progression of hydronephrosis.
