What Should Be Avoided When Suffering from Nephritis?
Disease description:
Recently, I have experienced symptoms of hematuria. After seeing a doctor, I was diagnosed with nephritis. I would like to learn more: what should be avoided if one has nephritis?
If diagnosed with nephritis, patients should avoid or limit the following categories of food:
1. High-sodium foods: Daily salt intake should be limited to less than 6g, and should be restricted to less than 3g when edema is evident, to avoid aggravating edema and hypertension.
2. High-protein foods: Limit intake of high-quality proteins to reduce the burden on the kidneys and prevent glomerulosclerosis caused by high-protein intake and hyperfiltration.
3. Irritating foods: Avoid spicy and fried foods, as well as tobacco, alcohol, coffee, and strong tea, as these may worsen kidney damage.
4. High-potassium foods: Limit intake of foods high in potassium such as fresh mushrooms, shiitake mushrooms, red dates, and legumes, to prevent elevated blood potassium levels which may affect heart function.
5. High-fat foods: Reduce intake of high-fat foods such as milk, soy milk powder, oatmeal, and black sesame paste, and maintain a low-fat diet.
