Disease description:
I was hospitalized for kidney stones, and during preoperative testing, I found out I was infected with hepatitis C. However, I don't feel any discomfort at all. What are the symptoms of hepatitis C?

Hepatitis C, also known as hepatitis C virus infection, can be categorized into different types based on the disease stage. Symptoms of acute hepatitis C are generally mild, mostly presenting as acute anicteric hepatitis, characterized by nausea, decreased appetite, general weakness, dark urine, and yellowing of the eyes. A minority of cases present as acute icteric hepatitis, with mild to moderate elevation of bilirubin levels. Symptoms of chronic hepatitis C are more insidious; mild cases often present with fatigue, poor appetite, and abdominal distension. Some patients may not experience significant symptoms, but laboratory tests may reveal fluctuating levels of transaminases and persistent positivity for the virus. If the disease progresses to cirrhosis, symptoms become severe and may include jaundice, ascites, variceal bleeding, hepatic encephalopathy, and a sharp decline in survival rates. Therefore, early diagnosis and treatment of hepatitis C are crucial.
