Dr. Shen Yonghua
Decompensated cirrhosis represents the advanced stage of liver cirrhosis. Cirrhosis can be classified into compensated and decompensated stages based on liver function status. The compensated stage is usually considered as the early phase, during which patients may be asymptomatic or experience only mild discomfort. In contrast, the decompensated stage signifies that cirrhosis has progressed to an advanced stage, characterized by significant impairment of liver function that no longer meets the body's normal metabolic demands. This stage is accompanied by a series of severe complications, such as ascites, jaundice, gastrointestinal bleeding, and hepatic encephalopathy. Biochemical indicators also show marked abnormalities, patients' quality of life deteriorates significantly, and their survival time is affected. Therefore, decompensated cirrhosis represents the end-stage manifestation of liver cirrhosis and is classified as the advanced phase.
