Is a blood pressure reading of 140 mmHg systolic and 90 mmHg diastolic considered hypertension?
Disease description:
I have measured my blood pressure for three consecutive days, and it has been around 140/90 mmHg. I would like to ask, is a blood pressure reading of 140 mmHg systolic and 90 mmHg diastolic considered hypertension?
Blood pressure with a systolic pressure (upper value) of 140 mmHg and diastolic pressure (lower value) of 90 mmHg falls at the borderline of hypertension and is also considered as stage 1 or mild hypertension. According to hypertension diagnostic criteria set by the World Health Organization and those used in China, if clinic blood pressure measurements taken on three different occasions without the use of antihypertensive medications show systolic pressure ≥140 mmHg or diastolic pressure ≥90 mmHg, a diagnosis of hypertension can be made. Blood pressure measurements should be accurate and performed properly, avoiding measurement immediately after emotional excitement or intense physical activity to ensure accuracy. For initial findings of elevated blood pressure, repeated measurements are recommended to confirm the diagnosis. If hypertension is confirmed, appropriate treatment measures should be implemented according to individual conditions, including lifestyle modifications and pharmacological therapy.
