Disease description:

My father has cirrhosis of the liver and has recently been experiencing symptoms of dizziness and general weakness. Tests showed his blood sugar levels are slightly elevated. I would like to use traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) to help regulate his condition, but I am unsure whether it is appropriate for someone with both cirrhosis and high blood sugar to take TCM remedies.

Patients with cirrhosis and high blood sugar can take traditional Chinese medicine, but treatment must be conducted under a doctor's guidance. Cirrhosis may be caused by long-term heavy alcohol consumption, bile stasis, or other factors, leading to impaired liver function and potentially causing abnormal glucose metabolism, which results in elevated blood sugar levels. For such conditions, TCM practitioners can formulate suitable herbal prescriptions based on the patient's specific condition and constitution. For example, Liu Wei Di Huang Wan and Zhi Bai Di Huang Wan are traditional Chinese medicines that can nourish yin and replenish the kidneys, thus benefiting the improvement of the condition. If the elevation in blood sugar is severe, traditional Chinese medicine alone may be insufficient for controlling glucose levels, and in such cases, antidiabetic Western medications such as metformin extended-release tablets or acarbose tablets should be taken according to medical advice. While taking traditional Chinese medicine, patients should also maintain a healthy diet, avoiding excessive intake of sugar and greasy foods to prevent interference with drug effectiveness and worsening of the condition. Additionally, regular monitoring of blood glucose and liver function, along with timely adjustments to the treatment plan, is very important.
