Disease description:

I have had diabetes for nearly 20 years. My recent blood sugar levels have been acceptable. I used to enjoy eating pomelo—may I still eat it now? Is it safe to consume pomelo when fasting blood glucose is as high as 9.5 mmol/L?

Dr. Yang Ziqi
For a fasting blood glucose level higher than 9.5 mmol/L, it is generally not recommended to consume pomelo immediately. Although pomelo has a relatively low sugar content and is rich in nutrients such as vitamin C and cellulose, when blood glucose levels are already significantly elevated, especially reaching a fasting blood glucose level of 9.5 mmol/L, this indicates inadequate glycemic control. At this stage, consuming pomelo may further affect blood glucose stability. When blood glucose is better controlled—specifically when fasting blood glucose is close to the normal range and postprandial glucose levels are also within the target range—small amounts of low-sugar fruits such as pomelo can be consumed. However, total intake should be controlled and consumption should be moderate, preferably as a snack between meals to minimize impact on postprandial glucose levels. Additionally, if blood glucose remains consistently elevated or fluctuates significantly, timely medical consultation is recommended to adjust treatment plans and arrange diet and exercise appropriately under a doctor's guidance for better glycemic control.
