My baby started experiencing nasal congestion not long after birth. I'm very worried and would like to ask the doctor: what should I do for a newborn with nasal congestion?

Dr. Zhou Xiaofeng
Newborn nasal congestion is usually caused by blockage of nasal secretions or swelling of the nasal mucosa, which is very common in newborn babies. Below are some management methods and recommendations: 1. Environmental humidity: Maintain indoor humidity; using a humidifier can help soften mucus, making it easier for the baby to expel it naturally or through suction. 2. Saline solution: Instill a small amount of normal saline (0.9% sterile saline) into the baby's nostrils to moisten and loosen nasal secretions, followed by gentle suction using a nasal aspirator bulb. 3. Lateral position: Place the baby on their side with the head slightly lowered to help drain nasal secretions. 4. Warm compress: Apply a warm towel around the baby's nose to help relieve nasal mucosal swelling. 5. Clear secretions: Use a special infant nasal aspirator bulb to gently suction secretions from the nostrils; handle gently. 6. Avoid smoke: Ensure there is no smoke or other irritating odors around the baby to prevent worsening of nasal congestion. If nasal congestion persists and affects the baby's feeding or sleep, seek medical attention promptly, as the baby may require a healthcare provider's assistance to clear more stubborn blockages or to check for other conditions such as allergies or infection. Never use adult nasal sprays or other medications not recommended by a doctor.
