What is aortic dissection?

Aortic dissection is a severe acute aortic syndrome, also known as acute chest pain syndrome. It is primarily caused by atherosclerosis and hypertension, and is characterized by a tear in the aortic intima, allowing blood to flow between the layers of the aortic wall, creating a false and true lumen. This condition is highly dangerous, and patients often experience severe chest and back pain, with the possibility of death due to massive hemorrhage. Treating aortic dissection is an emergency situation that typically requires immediate medical intervention. Treatment may include blood pressure-lowering medications, surgical repair (such as endovascular stent grafting or open surgery), or interventional procedures aimed at preventing aortic rupture, which could lead to catastrophic bleeding. In terms of prevention, controlling hypertension, undergoing regular medical checkups, and avoiding behaviors that may increase aortic pressure are crucial.
