What causes granulocytopenia?
Disease description:
I have had diarrhea recently and underwent a complete blood count test. Apart from low platelets, my granulocyte count is also very low. May I ask, what could cause a decrease in granulocytes?

Granulocytopenia usually refers to neutropenia, which can be caused by various factors.
1. Medications are common triggers, such as chloramphenicol, cephalosporins, sulfonamides, and antithyroid drugs. These medications may affect granulocyte production or destruction through different mechanisms.
2. Bone marrow damage is another significant cause, including chronic benzene poisoning, radiation injury, bone marrow metastasis of malignant tumors, myelofibrosis, and bone marrow failure syndromes. These conditions directly impair hematopoietic function of the bone marrow.
3. Infection-related factors such as infections with Salmonella typhi, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and immune-related factors such as primary or secondary autoimmune neutropenia can also lead to granulocytopenia.
4. Congenital leukopenia, a special type of inherited genetic disorder, can also be observed in infant patients.
If in doubt, please consult a relevant physician.
