Does high myopia inherit?
Disease description:
I myself have high myopia and am very concerned about passing it on to my children. I would like to know whether high myopia is hereditary.
High myopia, medically referred to as pathological myopia or axial myopia, has a genetic predisposition. If one or both parents have high myopia, the child's risk of developing myopia significantly increases. The inheritance pattern of myopia is typically multifactorial, involving multiple genes and environmental factors.
Certain specific genes have been identified to be associated with myopia development. For example, genes located on chromosome 15 have a certain influence on myopia. Not everyone who inherits these genes will develop high myopia; environmental factors such as prolonged reading and electronic device use can also contribute to the onset of myopia.
For individuals with a family history of high myopia, it is recommended to start regular vision examinations during childhood to enable early detection and implement appropriate interventions. Good visual habits, such as taking regular breaks and engaging in outdoor activities, may help slow the progression of myopia. If you have any questions, please consult a doctor.
