What causes pain in the eyeball?
Disease description:
My eyes have been hurting a lot these past two days, which makes me feel very uncomfortable. Doctor, what could be causing pain in the eyeballs?
Eye pain may be caused by various factors, including but not limited to the following:
1. Eye strain: Prolonged visual tasks such as staring at computer or mobile phone screens, reading, or writing may lead to fatigue of the eye muscles, causing eye pain.
2. Dry eye: Insufficient tear production that fails to adequately lubricate the eyeball may also result in a painful sensation.
3. Conjunctivitis: Inflammation of the conjunctiva caused by bacterial, viral infections or allergic reactions, often accompanied by redness, itching, and discharge.
4. Blepharitis: Infection or blockage of the eyelash follicles or meibomian glands, resulting in eyelid redness, swelling, and pain.
5. Foreign body sensation: Dust, eyelashes, or other small particles entering the eye can irritate the surface of the eyeball.
6. Glaucoma: Increased intraocular pressure compresses the optic nerve, causing severe eye pain, and may be accompanied by vision loss, nausea, and vomiting.
Note: If eye pain persists, is accompanied by vision loss, redness, or discharge, please seek medical attention promptly.
