What are the common diseases of the toenails?
Disease description:
Recently, I noticed that my toenail has turned gray and feels very itchy. I'm worried that I might have developed a fungal nail infection (onychomycosis). I would like to learn more about common toenail diseases.
Common foot nail diseases mainly include the following:
1. **Onychomycosis (Nail Fungus):** Caused by fungal infection, this condition is characterized by thickening, cloudiness, discoloration, separation, shrinking, nail loss, and an uneven nail surface. Treatment typically involves oral or topical antifungal medications.
2. **Paronychia:** Usually caused by injuries to the tissue surrounding the fingernails or toenails (such as hangnails, minor puncture wounds, or over-trimming), leading to bacterial or fungal infection. Initial symptoms may include itching, followed by pain, swelling, and abscess formation. Treatment options include the use of antibiotic or antifungal ointments.
3. **Ingrown Nail:** A condition in which the nail grows into the skin, commonly occurring on the big toe, which can cause swelling, pain, bleeding, and inflammation. In severe cases, it may affect walking. If not treated promptly, complications such as paronychia or periungual inflammation may develop.
4. **Athlete's Foot:** Caused by fungal infection, it not only affects the toes but may also involve the toenails, causing thickening or deformation of the nails, accompanied by itching and a burning sensation.
