Disease description:

I have noticed a slight odor under my armpits, and I suspect it might be axillary bromhidrosis (body odor). If there is a smell when I get close to my armpits, does that mean I have axillary bromhidrosis?

Having an odor when smelling close to the armpit does not necessarily mean directly that one has bromhidrosis (commonly known as body odor or axillary osmidrosis). Bromhidrosis, medically termed axillary odor, is a condition characterized by a distinctive unpleasant smell caused by the interaction of bacteria on the skin with excessive secretions from the axillary apocrine glands. This odor is usually strong and may be noticeable to others even without close physical contact.

In daily life, due to the high density of sweat glands in the armpit area, it is natural to have some degree of body odor, especially after exercise, in hot weather, or when hygiene has been neglected for an extended period. This normal body odor differs from bromhidrosis; it is typically mild and can be effectively managed through regular hygiene practices and good personal care habits.

Therefore, noticing an odor upon close sniffing of the armpit may be a normal physiological occurrence or due to poor personal hygiene habits, and does not necessarily indicate bromhidrosis. If the odor persists and is particularly strong, significantly affecting daily life and social interactions, it is advisable to seek medical consultation promptly.
