Dr. Yang Ziqi
Elevated creatinine typically refers to creatinine levels in the blood exceeding the normal range, which may indicate abnormal kidney function. Creatinine is a waste product generated from muscle metabolism and is primarily filtered and excreted from the body by the kidneys. When kidney function is impaired, such as when the glomerular filtration rate decreases, creatinine cannot be effectively excreted, leading to increased blood creatinine levels. There are various causes of elevated creatinine levels, including but not limited to: 1. Chronic kidney disease: Long-term hypertension, diabetes, and other conditions can lead to glomerulosclerosis and gradual deterioration of kidney function. 2. Acute kidney injury: Short-term effects on the kidneys, such as drug toxicity, severe dehydration, infections, or trauma. 3. Muscle damage: Extensive destruction of muscle tissue, such as from intense exercise or certain diseases, may increase creatinine production. 4. Medication effects: Certain medications, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and contrast agents, may cause temporary elevation of creatinine levels.
