What does it mean if alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels are elevated?
During my physical examination, the doctor mentioned that my alanine aminotransferase (ALT) level is elevated. I would like to ask the doctor, what does it mean when alanine aminotransferase is high?

Elevated alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels usually indicate liver damage. ALT is a common enzyme in the liver, and when liver cells are injured or destroyed, ALT is released into the bloodstream, causing elevated ALT levels in the blood. Common causes include:
1. Hepatitis: Viral infections such as hepatitis B or C, or non-viral hepatitis such as fatty liver disease or alcohol-related liver disease.
2. Excessive alcohol consumption: Long-term heavy drinking can cause liver damage.
3. Fatty liver disease: Associated with metabolic disorders such as obesity, diabetes, and high cholesterol.
4. Other diseases: Liver cirrhosis, liver cancer, bile duct obstruction, heart disease, and muscle injury may also affect ALT levels.
If elevated ALT levels are detected, timely medical evaluation is recommended.
