When I had my liver examined, the doctor mentioned that I showed signs of liver cancer. I am somewhat worried about transmitting it to others. I would like to ask the doctor: is liver cancer contagious?

Dr. Yang Ziqi

Primary liver cancer itself is not contagious and is not a disease that spreads directly through contact, air, or bodily fluids. The development of liver cancer is usually associated with multiple factors, including chronic hepatitis virus (such as hepatitis B or C) infection, alcohol-related liver disease caused by long-term alcohol consumption, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, genetic factors, environmental factors, and exposure to aflatoxins.

Although hepatitis viruses can be transmitted and increase the risk of liver cancer, the formation of liver cancer is a complex, multistep process, and its malignant transformation does not directly cause contagion. Therefore, casual contact with individuals who have liver cancer, such as shaking hands, sharing meals, or hugging, does not transmit liver cancer.

Preventing viral infections is an important measure to reduce the occurrence of liver cancer. Regular medical checkups, especially for high-risk populations such as individuals infected with hepatitis B or C viruses, can lead to early detection of liver cancer and improved treatment outcomes.
