Disease description:

I suspect that I may have hypertension, so I went to have my blood pressure checked. I would like to ask, what are the normal values for systolic and diastolic blood pressure?

Dr. Tian Hongbo

Systolic blood pressure refers to the pressure generated when the left ventricle of the heart contracts and pumps blood into the arteries. Its normal range is 90–139 mmHg. Diastolic blood pressure, on the other hand, refers to the lateral pressure exerted by blood flow on the arterial walls when the heart is at rest. During this phase, the large arteries elastically recoil, resulting in decreased arterial pressure. The normal range for diastolic blood pressure is generally 60–89 mmHg. If a patient's blood pressure falls outside this range and is accompanied by symptoms of discomfort, timely medical consultation and treatment are recommended.

If a patient's blood pressure values fall within the mentioned ranges, they are considered normal. However, if the blood pressure exceeds or falls below the normal ranges described above, it may indicate the presence of hypertension or hypotension, respectively. Patients with hypertension are advised to take antihypertensive medications under a physician's guidance, while those with hypotension may follow medical advice to improve their condition through measures such as drinking more water and engaging in appropriate physical activity.

In daily life, patients should maintain a healthy diet and balanced nutrient intake, and avoid excessive fatigue or chronic late-night sleep deprivation.
