Can cervical erosion heal on its own?
I've been experiencing severe itching lately, and my doctor diagnosed it as cervical erosion. So, can cervical erosion heal on its own?
Cervical erosion, commonly referred to as cervical ectopia, is a normal physiological phenomenon rather than a disease state. It actually describes the outward displacement of columnar epithelium on the cervix under the influence of estrogen, causing it to appear red and creating a contrast with the surrounding normal tissue. This condition generally does not require special treatment and can resolve spontaneously, as it commonly occurs and recovers naturally within a woman's body, especially during the reproductive years.
However, if accompanied by abnormal symptoms such as irregular bleeding, increased vaginal discharge, or if there is a human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, medical evaluation and possibly treatment may be necessary. Regular gynecological examinations and cervical screening (TCT and HPV testing) are important to monitor for any potential abnormalities, especially early signs of cervical cancer.
