Can herpes on the lips cause shingles?
Disease description:
Recently, many blisters have appeared on my mouth, and my doctor diagnosed it as herpes labialis. Can herpes labialis cause herpes zoster?

Herpes on the lips generally does not cause shingles. Herpes on the lips is usually caused by infection with the herpes simplex virus, while shingles is caused by infection with the varicella-zoster virus. Although both are viral infections, they are caused by different types of viruses, so herpes on the lips does not directly develop into shingles.
Symptoms of lip herpes typically include blisters around the lips, a burning sensation, and are generally self-limiting, meaning they can resolve on their own within a few days even without treatment. In contrast, shingles is often accompanied by severe nerve pain and has a longer disease course. Early antiviral treatment is required to prevent the occurrence of postherpetic neuralgia.
