The optimal time for fetal cardiac color ultrasound

Fetal cardiac ultrasound, also known as fetal echocardiography, is usually performed during pregnancy to evaluate the structure and function of the fetal heart. The optimal time for this examination is between 20 to 24 weeks of gestation, a period commonly referred to as the "four-dimensional ultrasound" or "systematic fetal ultrasound examination." At this stage, the fetal organs have developed to a more mature state and the amniotic fluid volume is adequate, allowing clearer visualization of the various structures of the fetal heart.

If the pregnant woman has a history of hereditary heart disease or other high-risk factors, the doctor may recommend an earlier specialized cardiac screening, such as between 18 to 22 weeks, or a follow-up examination later to more closely monitor the fetal cardiac condition. The exact timing of the examination should be determined based on the individual circumstances of the pregnant woman and the doctor's recommendation. During each prenatal visit, the doctor will decide whether a fetal cardiac ultrasound is necessary based on the health status of the fetus and the mother.
