Folliculitis symptoms and causes include: Symptoms: The main symptoms of folliculitis include red papules centered around hair follicles, which may be accompanied by pain or itching. These papules can rapidly develop into pustules containing white or yellowish-white pus. After rupture of the pustules, crusting occurs and superficial scars may remain. These symptoms typically appear on hairy areas such as the scalp, back of the neck, back, and areas prone to friction. Causes: Folliculitis is primarily caused by bacterial infection of the hair follicles and surrounding tissues, with Staphylococcus aureus being the most common pathogen. Additionally, other bacteria such as Staphylococcus epidermidis, Streptococcus species, and Pseudomonas species may also cause folliculitis. Predisposing factors include skin stretching, friction, scratching injuries, disruption of corticosteroids, skin maceration, local occlusive dressings, and systemic factors such as immunosuppression, diabetes, and long-term use of glucocorticoids. Furthermore, other skin conditions such as acne and eczema may lead to secondary folliculitis.
