Are cold sores and shingles caused by a virus?
Disease description:
Recently, I have developed herpes sores on my lips and would like to know whether lip herpes and shingles are caused by the same virus?
Herpes on the lips and shingles are not caused by the same virus. Herpes on the lips is primarily caused by infection with the herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), which is mainly transmitted through saliva and skin contact. After infection, the virus remains latent in nerve cells and may cause herpes outbreaks when the body's immunity decreases. Shingles, on the other hand, is caused by the varicella-zoster virus (VZV). This virus also remains latent and can be reactivated when immunity declines, leading to herpes outbreaks often accompanied by significant nerve pain. Therefore, in treatment, appropriate antiviral drugs should be selected based on the cause, and therapy should be conducted following medical advice.
