Lower abdominal pain in women can have various causes, including but not limited to: 1. Menstrual-related pain: Abdominal pain occurring during or around the time of menstruation, commonly known as dysmenorrhea, is caused by prostaglandins released during uterine contractions that help expel the uterine lining. 2. Ovulation pain: Some women may experience brief lower abdominal pain on one side during ovulation, known as "mittelschmerz" or ovarian pain during ovulation. 3. Digestive system issues: Conditions such as gastritis, gastric ulcers, intestinal inflammation, or intestinal colic may cause abdominal discomfort. 4. Urinary tract infections: Infections such as urinary tract infections (UTIs) can cause lower abdominal pain and are often accompanied by symptoms such as frequent urination, urgency, and painful urination. 5. Gynecological conditions: Pelvic inflammatory disease, ovarian cysts, uterine fibroids, or ectopic pregnancy can also cause lower abdominal pain, possibly accompanied by other symptoms such as abnormal bleeding or pain during intercourse. If lower abdominal pain persists, worsens, or is accompanied by other severe symptoms, immediate medical attention should be sought.
