How is uremia treated?
Disease description:
I heard from a friend that he has uremia, and it seems very difficult to cure. How is uremia treated?
The treatment of uremia mainly includes three approaches: pharmacotherapy, dialysis therapy, and kidney transplantation.
1. **Pharmacotherapy**: Primarily used to alleviate various complications caused by uremia, such as hyperkalemia, anemia, and disturbances in calcium and phosphorus metabolism. The use of medications such as potassium-lowering agents, erythropoietin-stimulating agents, iron supplements, and active vitamin D can improve symptoms, but cannot cure uremia.
2. **Dialysis therapy**: Includes hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. Hemodialysis filters the blood through a dialysis machine to remove metabolic waste and excess water from the body; peritoneal dialysis involves placement of a catheter into the abdominal cavity and uses the peritoneum as a dialysis membrane.
3. **Kidney transplantation**: Is the most effective treatment for uremia. Replacing the diseased kidney with a healthy one can restore renal function and improve quality of life. However, kidney transplantation requires an appropriate donor organ and long-term administration of immunosuppressive agents post-surgery to prevent rejection.
