Dr. Zhao Xiaodong
Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) refers to an inflammation of the female reproductive organs within the pelvis, the connective tissues surrounding the uterus, and the pelvic peritoneum. If not treated promptly, PID can indeed lead to infertility. The inflammation may cause adhesions, narrowing, or even blockage of the fallopian tubes, interfering with the meeting of egg and sperm and thus hindering conception. Additionally, PID may cause ovarian dysfunction, affecting the normal ovulation process. However, this does not mean that all women who have had PID will become infertile. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment can significantly reduce these risks. If symptoms of PID occur, such as lower abdominal pain, pain during sexual intercourse, abnormal vaginal discharge, or fever, medical attention should be sought promptly. Timely antibiotic treatment, along with follow-up monitoring and management, can help prevent complications and protect fertility. If planning for pregnancy, it is advisable to discuss with a doctor the best strategies for prevention and treatment.
