My baby is five months old. He used to have a bowel movement once a day, but in the past two weeks, he has only had one bowel movement every seven to eight days. I would like to ask if having a bowel movement once every seven to eight days is considered normal for constipation?

Having a bowel movement only once every seven or eight days is not normal. The normal frequency of bowel movements is typically 1-2 times per day. If you have fewer than 2-3 bowel movements per week, you may be experiencing constipation. Constipation may be accompanied by symptoms such as dry and hard stools, difficulty passing stool, prolonged time for defecation, and related discomforts. The causes of constipation are varied, and in most cases, it is due to improper lifestyle habits or dietary patterns.

The following measures can help improve constipation:

1. Adjust your diet: Eat more foods rich in crude fiber and those that lubricate the intestines, such as celery, oats, onions, bananas, and honey. These foods can increase the water content and volume of the intestines, promote intestinal peristalsis, and aid defecation.

2. Increase fluid intake: Drinking more water or honey water helps soften the stool, making it easier to pass.

3. Engage in appropriate physical activity: Regular exercise can stimulate gastrointestinal motility and improve constipation. It is recommended to perform moderate exercise daily, such as walking, jogging, or practicing yoga.

4. Establish a regular bowel habit: Ideally, choose a relaxed time each morning to attempt defecation, even if you don't feel the urge. This practice helps train the brain to form a memory and develop a consistent bowel habit.

5. Avoid bad habits: When defecating, stay focused and avoid distractions such as using your phone, reading books, or newspapers. These behaviors prolong the time of defecation and increase the risk of constipation.
