Does increased bowel movement indicate that the baby has dropped into the pelvis?
Disease description:
I'm approaching my due date in a few days. Recently, I've been having a lot of bowel movements for no apparent reason, needing to go to the bathroom several times a day. I'd like to ask whether this could be a sign of the baby dropping into the pelvis?
An increase in bowel movements does not directly indicate that the fetus has engaged into the pelvis. Fetal engagement refers to the process in late pregnancy when the fetal head descends into the pelvic inlet, preparing for delivery. This process typically occurs between 36 to 38 weeks of gestation in first-time mothers, although for women who have given birth before, it may happen later or even at the onset of labor. An increased frequency of bowel movements may be related to various factors, including dietary changes, alterations in intestinal flora, hormonal effects during pregnancy, or mild gastrointestinal discomfort. If this change is accompanied by other symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, a strong and sudden urge to defecate, or significant changes in bowel habits, it may reflect changes in gastrointestinal function rather than being a sign of fetal engagement. Pregnant women experiencing these symptoms should monitor their condition, maintain healthy dietary habits, and consult a healthcare provider when necessary to rule out other potential issues.
