People with high uric acid levels can consume water chestnuts in moderation. High uric acid levels, commonly referred to as hyperuricemia, typically result from abnormal purine metabolism and represent an important pathological basis for diseases such as gout and uric acid nephropathy. As a food item, water chestnuts do not have a high purine content—approximately 70 milligrams of purine per 100 grams—which places them in the moderate purine category. For individuals with elevated uric acid levels, moderate consumption of water chestnuts is acceptable and will not significantly increase uric acid levels in the body. However, caution should be exercised during consumption. Water chestnuts should not be eaten with pork, as water chestnuts are cold in nature while pork contains a high amount of fat. Combining these may irritate the gastrointestinal tract and potentially cause diarrhea. Additionally, water chestnuts should not be consumed with crab, as both are classified as cold-natured foods. Eating them together may damage the gastrointestinal mucosa and cause discomfort such as nausea. Individuals with spleen and stomach deficiency-cold should avoid consuming water chestnuts, as the cold nature of the food may exacerbate internal coldness and lead to gastrointestinal discomfort.
