Disease description:

I am a 30-year-old woman who gave birth to a baby boy naturally one month ago. I have been experiencing significant constipation since delivery, with difficulty passing stools, mainly due to very dry bowel movements. What can I do to relieve postpartum constipation?

Dr. Shen Yonghua

Postpartum constipation is a common issue many new mothers experience. Due to physical exhaustion during childbirth, the body's incomplete recovery after delivery, and changes in diet, constipation can frequently occur. Suggestions include:

1. Establishing a regular bowel movement habit: Try to defecate at the same time each day to help train the intestines to develop a regular response.

2. Appropriate exercise: Activities such as postpartum recovery exercises or simple household chores can help stimulate intestinal motility.

3. Avoid excessive straining: The pelvic floor muscles are relatively weak after childbirth, and excessive straining during bowel movements may cause damage; therefore, it should be avoided.

4. Dietary adjustments: Increase intake of dietary fiber, such as whole grains, vegetables, and fruits, which can help promote intestinal motility. At the same time, maintain adequate fluid intake—at least eight glasses of water daily.

5. Consult a doctor: If constipation is severe, it is recommended to use appropriate medications under a doctor's guidance to avoid the adverse effects of self-medication.

If the above measures are ineffective or if severe abdominal pain, bleeding, or other symptoms occur, seek medical attention promptly.
