Disease description:

I have been postpartum for more than a month, and I'm considering getting an IUD (intrauterine device) inserted. However, my friend doesn't recommend this procedure. I would like to ask the doctor: why is it not recommended for women to get an IUD?

Dr. Zhao Xiaodong

There are several main reasons why it is not recommended for women to have an intrauterine device (IUD) inserted:

1. Health conditions: Women suffering from uterine fibroids, endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, or other reproductive system disorders, as well as those with severe menstrual irregularities, may experience worsening of their existing conditions or develop infections after IUD insertion.

2. Surgical risks: IUD insertion is an invasive procedure that carries a risk of infection. Improper technique during the procedure may cause injury to the uterus, such as uterine perforation.

3. Side effects: In the initial period after insertion, some women may experience increased menstrual bleeding, prolonged menstruation, abdominal pain, or other discomforts. Some individuals may find these side effects intolerable, thus affecting their quality of life.

4. Contraceptive failure: Although IUDs are a long-acting contraceptive method, there is a risk of device expulsion or displacement, which can lead to contraceptive failure.

5. Individual variation: Individual responses to IUDs vary, and in rare cases, some women may develop allergic reactions to the materials used in the device.

Women are advised to consult with a qualified physician when choosing a contraceptive method and to make appropriate decisions based on their individual circumstances.
