Hello doctor, I have gastritis. My friend sent me a box of persimmons. May I ask if it's okay for someone with gastritis to eat persimmons?

Dr. Shen Yonghua

Persimmon is a nutrient-rich fruit containing various vitamins, minerals, and dietary fiber. Ripe persimmons have a sweet taste and can help moisten the lungs, relieve coughing, stimulate saliva production, and quench thirst. However, persimmons can produce gastric acid in the stomach, which may irritate the gastric mucosa, especially for individuals who already have gastritis, potentially worsening their symptoms. Unripe persimmons contain high levels of tannic acid, a substance that can combine with gastric acid in the stomach to form a gel-like substance that is difficult to digest, possibly exacerbating gastrointestinal discomfort and even causing gastric stone formation.

Persimmon is considered a cold-natured food, which may cause some irritation to the digestive system. For patients with gastritis, this irritation may further damage the gastric mucosa and worsen symptoms. Gastritis patients should follow dietary principles of easy digestion and minimal irritation. If gastritis is in the acute phase or there are significant stomach discomfort symptoms such as stomach pain, bloating, or acid reflux, it is recommended to temporarily avoid eating persimmons, especially unripe ones.

If gastritis is in remission and the patient experiences no significant discomfort, moderate consumption of ripe persimmons is acceptable. However, intake should still be controlled to avoid excessive consumption that may irritate the gastric mucosa.
