Is berberine effective for gastritis?
I have had gastritis for three years. I heard from others that berberine can treat gastritis. I would like to ask, is berberine effective for gastritis?
Berberine, also known as protoberberine, is an alkaloid extracted from the traditional Chinese medicines Coptis chinensis (Huang Lian) and Phellodendron amurense (Huang Bai). It has antibacterial, antiviral, and immune-regulating properties. Berberine is primarily used to treat intestinal infections, such as bacterial diarrhea, as it can effectively inhibit various intestinal pathogenic bacteria.
However, berberine's therapeutic effect on gastritis is not significant, and it should not be used as the primary treatment for gastritis. Gastritis treatment generally requires a comprehensive approach tailored to the patient's specific condition, including medication and dietary adjustments. Gastritis can be classified into acute and chronic types, and its causes are complex, potentially involving Helicobacter pylori infection, drug-induced irritation, autoimmune factors, and others. Although berberine has certain antibacterial effects, its inhibitory action against Helicobacter pylori is weak, and it shows limited efficacy in treating non-infectious gastritis.
For patients with gastritis, it is recommended to seek timely medical attention, undergo appropriate diagnostic tests, identify the underlying cause, and receive treatment under a physician's guidance. Maintaining healthy lifestyle and dietary habits can benefit both the treatment and prevention of gastritis.
