What are the symptoms of thrombocytopenia?
Our organization arranged a medical checkup, and the results indicated that my platelet count is偏低 (lower than normal). What symptoms can be caused by a deficiency in platelets?
Thrombocytopenia, or low platelet count, refers to a condition in which the number of platelets in the blood falls below the normal range. Platelets are a cellular component of blood, and their main function is to participate in the coagulation process upon vascular injury to prevent bleeding. When the number of platelets is insufficient, patients may experience the following symptoms:
1. Skin bruising or purpura: After minor impacts, purple or red spots may appear on the skin, caused by subcutaneous bleeding.
2. Fatigue: Although a low platelet count does not usually directly cause fatigue, long-term chronic bleeding may lead to anemia, which can result in a feeling of tiredness.
3. Abnormal bleeding: This includes nosebleeds, bleeding gums, heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding, or gastrointestinal bleeding.
4. Prolonged bleeding: Wounds may take longer to heal, and even minor cuts may cause continuous bleeding.
5. Oral mucosal bleeding: The gums may bleed easily while brushing teeth or eating hard foods.
6. Blood in urine or stool: In severe cases, blood may appear in the urine or feces.
7. Other symptoms: Mild thrombocytopenia may cause fatigue, weakness, and reduced interest in activities; persistent platelet reduction may induce anemia, accompanied by symptoms such as enlargement of the liver and spleen or jaundice.
