Low blood pressure, medically referred to as hypotension or low blood pressure, describes a condition in which the pressure of blood against the blood vessel walls falls below the normal range. In adults, hypotension is generally defined as a systolic pressure (upper value) below 90 mmHg or a diastolic pressure (lower value) below 60 mmHg. Low blood pressure itself is not always harmful, as many people can maintain a healthy lifestyle even with lower blood pressure. However, in some cases, hypotension may lead to serious problems.
1. Effects on the digestive system: Low blood pressure can also affect blood supply to the digestive system, causing poor digestion, such as bloating and reduced appetite.
2. Damage to the heart and brain: Long-term hypotension can lead to insufficient blood perfusion to the heart and brain tissues, resulting in ischemia and hypoxia of the myocardium and brain tissue. This may cause symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest tightness, sweating, visual darkening, or even fainting.
If blood pressure remains consistently below 90/60 mmHg, especially when associated with pathological conditions causing persistent hypotension, such as anemia, wasting diseases, or tuberculosis, prompt medical attention is necessary.
