Dr. Tian Hongbo

Hypertensive patients can drink black tea, but should maintain moderation, avoid excessive strength and overconsumption, and adjust according to their own condition.

1. Avoid excessive strength and overconsumption: Components in black tea such as caffeine and theophylline may stimulate the heart and blood vessels, increasing blood pressure. Therefore, drinking overly strong black tea should be avoided, as well as consumption in the evening, to prevent effects on sleep and blood pressure.

2. Moderate consumption is acceptable: Components in black tea such as polyphenols and catechins have antioxidant and lipid-lowering effects; long-term moderate consumption is beneficial for cardiovascular health. Drinking moderate amounts (not more than 2-3 cups daily) of non-concentrated tea is safe for most hypertensive patients.

3. Individual differences: Different individuals may react differently to components in tea, and some patients may not tolerate black tea. If discomfort occurs after consumption, discontinue use immediately and consult a physician.

Under a physician's guidance, hypertensive patients may moderately consume black tea, but should avoid overconsumption, especially concurrent intake with antihypertensive medications, to prevent interference with drug effectiveness.
