May I ask, my wife is 32 years old this year. She recently had a check-up revealing low globulin levels. I would like to know what causes low globulin levels?

Dr. Liu Feng

Globulin is an important protein in the blood, mainly produced by plasma cells in the immune system, including immunoglobulins. Low globulin levels, known as hypoglobulinemia, may be caused by the following factors:

1. Malnutrition: Long-term insufficient protein intake or problems with digestion and absorption can reduce protein synthesis in the body, thereby affecting globulin levels.

2. Liver dysfunction: The liver is the main organ responsible for globulin synthesis. Liver diseases such as hepatitis and cirrhosis may lead to insufficient globulin production, thereby lowering globulin levels.

3. Immune system: Immune system disorders or immunodeficiency diseases may affect globulin synthesis or metabolism, leading to reduced globulin levels. In addition, certain medications that suppress the immune system may also cause a decrease in globulin levels.

4. Kidneys: Kidney disease or other kidney problems may affect globulin excretion, leading to reduced globulin levels in the blood.

5. Other factors: Severe burns, chronic protein-losing gastrointestinal diseases, and similar conditions may also cause low globulin levels.

6. Genetics: Rare genetic disorders, such as X-linked agammaglobulinemia, can also affect normal globulin production.

When globulin levels are low, timely medical attention and treatment are necessary.
