Disease description:

A friend said that type O blood is universal and can be transfused to individuals of any blood type. I would like to ask, can type O blood be transfused to someone with Rh-negative blood (a rare blood type in China often referred to as "panda blood")?

Doctor's answer (1)
Dr. Liu Feng

Panda blood usually refers to Rh-negative blood, which is a relatively rare blood type. Type O blood is often referred to by doctors as the "universal blood" because it can be transfused to various blood types, such as type A, type B, and type AB. However, type O blood can also be divided into Rh-negative and Rh-positive types.

If type O blood is Rh-negative, then its blood type is compatible with panda blood (Rh-negative blood), and therefore it can be used for blood transfusion to individuals with panda blood.

If type O blood is Rh-positive, then its blood type is incompatible with panda blood (Rh-negative blood), and transfusing Rh-positive type O blood to someone with Rh-negative panda blood may cause a hemolytic reaction, which could potentially be life-threatening.

Therefore, before a blood transfusion, blood typing must be performed to ensure compatibility and avoid serious consequences such as hemolytic reactions. Additionally, if any adverse symptoms occur during the transfusion, the doctor should be informed immediately.
