What are the symptoms of hemolytic disease in infants?
My child was diagnosed with hemolytic disease by the doctor right after birth. I never expected my baby to have this condition. I would like to ask, what are the common symptoms of hemolytic disease in infants?
Hemolytic disease of the newborn can be mainly classified into the following categories of symptoms:
1. Jaundice: This is the most common symptom of hemolysis,表现为infant's skin, sclera (white of the eye), and other areas turning yellow. Jaundice typically appears within 24 hours after birth or on the second day, and progresses rapidly.
2. Anemia: Due to red blood cell destruction, infants may develop varying degrees of anemia. Severe anemia can lead to generalized edema, heart failure, and other symptoms. Anemia may cause infants to appear fatigued, tired, and pale.
3. Hepatosplenomegaly: In cases of severe anemia, infants may develop明显hepatosplenomegaly, possibly accompanied by discomfort such as abdominal pain and bloating.
4. Neurological abnormalities: When the level of bilirubin in the blood is excessively high, it may damage brain cells, causing bilirubin encephalopathy. Affected infants may exhibit neurological symptoms such as lethargy, seizures, and fixed staring of the eyes; severe cases can lead to death.
5. Fever: Some infants may experience elevated body temperature, but it is usually low-grade fever. If bilirubin encephalopathy has developed, high fever may occur, indicating severe illness.
Infants with hemolytic disease may also exhibit other symptoms such as edema and fetal hydrops. Diagnosis should be confirmed through blood tests, and appropriate treatment should be administered according to the severity of the condition, such as phototherapy, blood transfusion, or exchange transfusion therapy.
