The acidity or alkalinity of semen, referred to as the pH value of semen, is an indicator used to measure the acidic or alkaline level of semen. Under normal circumstances, the pH value of semen should range between 7.2 and 8.0, indicating a weakly alkaline nature.
The pH value of semen is mainly determined by fluids secreted by the seminal vesicles and prostate gland. These fluids are rich in buffering substances capable of neutralizing the acidic environment of the vagina, thus providing a more suitable environment for sperm survival.
If the pH value of semen is too low, it may cause decreased sperm motility or even sperm death, affecting fertility. Conversely, if the pH value is too high, although the impact on sperm may be minimal, it could still affect normal sperm function.
Abnormalities in the pH level of semen may be caused by various factors, such as infections of the reproductive system, prostatitis, or seminal vesiculitis, which may affect male fertility. If an abnormal semen pH level is detected, it is recommended to consult a doctor promptly.
