Ankle Sprain Recovery Phase

Aug 18, 2024 Source: Cainiu Health
Disease description:

My ankle sprain has lasted for several days. The ankle is still swollen, slightly bruised around the area, and it hurts when I walk, so I can only move slowly with a limp. I have been applying medication on time and resting, but it hasn't fully healed yet. I would like to know which stage I am currently at and how I should proceed with treatment.

The recovery process of an ankle sprain can be divided into three main stages: acute phase, subacute phase, and rehabilitation phase.

I. Acute phase: 0-72 hours after injury

1. Rest: Immediately stop all activities to avoid further injury.

2. Ice application: Apply an ice pack or cold towel to the injured area for 15-20 minutes every 2-3 hours to reduce swelling and pain.

3. Compression: Use an elastic bandage or compression sock to compress the injured area and minimize bleeding and swelling.

4. Elevation: Elevate the injured ankle above heart level to promote blood return and reduce swelling.

II. Subacute phase: 3 days to 2 weeks after injury

1. Physical therapy: Includes heat application to promote blood circulation, as well as progressive stretching and strengthening exercises to strengthen the muscles around the ankle.

2. Balance training: Perform exercises such as using a balance board or single-leg standing to improve ankle stability and prevent re-injury.

III. Rehabilitation phase: 2 weeks to 1 month after injury

1. Muscle strengthening: Perform targeted muscle-strengthening exercises, especially for the muscle groups around the ankle, such as the triceps surae and tibialis anterior.

2. Balance training: Improve ankle stability and balance through exercises such as single-leg standing and walking with eyes closed.

3. Functional recovery: Gradually increase exercise intensity and range of motion, such as jogging, jumping, until full recovery of sports function is achieved.
