Disease description:

I accidentally sprained my ligament while exercising a few days ago. Now the injured area is swollen and very painful, especially when moving—it hurts even more. I would like to know, if I have a ligament sprain, will it gradually heal on its own if I just rest and avoid moving it?

Whether a ligament strain can heal on its own depends on the severity of the injury.

1. Mild ligament strain: If only a small number of fibers are torn, the injury can usually heal gradually after appropriate rest, immobilization, ice application, compression, and elevation of the affected limb. This is because the human body has a certain capacity for self-repair, and under suitable conditions, ligaments can slowly restore their structure and function through the body's natural healing mechanisms.

2. Moderate to severe ligament strains: Self-healing may be difficult or require a longer time, and complications may occur. Severe strains can lead to joint instability and recurrent sprains.

Ligaments are tough fibrous tissues that connect bones to bones, serving to stabilize joints and limit excessive movement. When subjected to excessive stretching or twisting forces, ligaments can become injured, resulting in a strain.

If significant pain, persistent swelling, or severe limitation of joint movement occurs after a strain, it is recommended to seek medical evaluation at a hospital immediately.
