The most common cause of cervical lymphadenopathy is inflammatory lymphadenopathy, which is usually triggered by infectious lesions on the skin of the head and face, pharyngitis, upper respiratory tract infections, or inflammation of the ears and nose.

In the early stages of inflammation, pain in the enlarged lymph nodes may occur; however, as the underlying condition improves, the pain typically subsides and the degree of lymph node enlargement diminishes or resolves completely. In such cases, cervical lymphadenopathy is generally not serious.

However, cervical lymphadenopathy may also be caused by more severe conditions, such as cervical lymph node tuberculosis, lymphoma, or metastatic cancer to the cervical lymph nodes. These conditions may require prolonged treatment and could even be life-threatening.

Various external stimuli and allergic or hypersensitivity reactions can also lead to significant reactive proliferation of lymphocytes within the lymph nodes, resulting in lymph node enlargement. Lymphadenopathy in such cases is usually benign, but evaluation and treatment depend on the specific circumstances.

If cervical lymphadenopathy occurs, prompt medical attention is recommended.
